A FORMER Paralympic weightlifting coach from Warners Bay had his jail term for stealing an excavator reduced to 250 hours of community service yesterday.

Neil Davis, of Warners Bay Road, Warners Bay, was sentenced in March this year to a maximum of seven months' jail, with a non-parole period of three months, for stealing a $46,920 excavator on June 28, 2007.

Davis, 53, had pleaded guilty to one count of larceny.

The carpenter told Newcastle District Court yesterday he stole the excavator because he was facing financial difficulty after the demise of an 11-year relationship.

He was then diagnosed with cancer of the leg and kidneys.

Judge Greg Hosking ordered Davis complete 250 hours of community service and pay $860 compensation to the victim of the theft for damage caused to the excavator.
